This is one of the more interesting formulations VT has released: a tone-up sunscreen that incorporates PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotide) into the base, combining daily UV protection with the regenerative benefits Korean dermatology associates with salmon-derived PDRN. At $66 for 50g, the pricing is high for a sunscreen but fair for a hybrid PDRN-SPF product. Most tone-up sunscreens are cosmetic; this one is attempting to function as a light treatment product too.
Tone-up sunscreens use light-reflecting pigments (titanium dioxide, mica) to deliver a brightening finish. The "essence" in the name is accurate: the texture is lighter than most sunscreens, closer to a tinted essence-SPF hybrid. The PDRN inclusion is at lower concentration than dedicated PDRN serums, but for users already running a full PDRN routine, this adds a daily-wear reinforcement at the sunscreen step.
SPF 50+ PA++++ chemical filter blend protects against UVB and UVA damage. Tone-up pigments provide an instant brightened finish, particularly on dull or uneven skin tones. PDRN at maintenance concentration supports skin regeneration. Niacinamide adds modest brightening. Texture is essence-light, absorbs quickly without white cast on most skin tones.
Apply as the final AM skincare step, before makeup. Use two finger lengths of product for face and neck. Allow 2 to 3 minutes for the film to set. Reapply every 2 hours with significant sun exposure. For daily commute use, morning application is usually sufficient through the day. Works well as a no-makeup base product for low-effort days.
It's at maintenance, not treatment, concentration. For users running a dedicated PDRN serum (like REJURAN or similar), this provides reinforcement. For users who want PDRN as their only PDRN product, it's under-powered; go with a dedicated ampoule instead.
Different positioning. REJURAN hasn't released a flagship tone-up SPF yet. VT's offering is currently the most well-known PDRN-SPF hybrid on the accessible market.
Potentially, yes. Tone-up sunscreens use reflective pigments that can appear gray or ashy on Fitzpatrick V and VI skin tones. Swatch-test before a full-face commitment. For deeper skin tones, a clear SPF may be preferable.
Rarely. The essence texture absorbs cleanly. If you experience pilling, wait longer (3 minutes instead of 2) before applying makeup, or use less product and reapply if needed.
Moderate sensitivity, yes. Very reactive skin should sample first given the chemical filter content. PDRN is salmon-derived, so users with fish allergies should avoid.
