Enzyme powder washes are a Japanese and Korean skincare format dating back decades, and they remain one of the most underrated exfoliation methods for sensitive skin. TIRTIR's Hydro Boost version adds humectants to the traditional enzyme base, producing a wash that exfoliates without the stripping feel typical of powder cleansers. At 75g, the tub looks small but lasts 2 to 3 months with consistent daily use because powder is highly concentrated.
Enzyme exfoliation works differently from acid exfoliation. Proteolytic enzymes (typically papain from papaya or bromelain from pineapple) break down the keratin proteins in dead skin cells, lifting them off without altering pH or irritating the living skin below. For users who cannot tolerate AHA or BHA, or who want gentler daily exfoliation, enzyme powders are the best-tolerated tool in the exfoliation category.
Proteolytic enzymes digest dead skin protein on the surface, producing smoother texture without chemical exfoliation. Humectant additions (hyaluronic acid, glycerin) hydrate during cleansing, preventing the dry-stripped feel of typical powder washes. The powder-to-foam activation when mixed with water produces a soft lather that cleanses lightly while enzymes do the exfoliation work. Daily use produces visibly smoother, brighter skin over 2 to 3 weeks without over-exfoliation risk.
Wet face. Dispense a pea-size amount of powder into wet palms. Add water gradually while rubbing hands together to activate the foam. Apply the foam to face, massage gently for 30 to 45 seconds. Rinse thoroughly. Use daily or every other day. Can be combined with a gentle foaming cleanser for heavier cleaning days.
No. Enzyme exfoliation is gentler and surface-level. For deep pore congestion or thicker dead skin buildup, AHAs and BHAs are more effective. Enzymes are ideal for daily maintenance exfoliation, not transformative resurfacing.
All three are enzyme-forward powder cleansers. Tatcha uses rice bran with papaya enzymes at premium pricing. Dermalogica uses rice with salicylic acid for extra exfoliation at mid-range pricing. TIRTIR is Korean take with humectant focus at similar mid-range pricing. For gentle hydrating exfoliation: TIRTIR. For more exfoliation power: Dermalogica.
For most skin types: yes. For very dry or reactive skin: every other day. Monitor for irritation. If skin feels sensitized, drop to 2 to 3 times per week.
Daily use: 2 to 3 months. The powder is highly concentrated; a pea-size amount creates abundant foam.
Surface-level yes; deep congestion no. Enzymes work on the skin surface, not inside the pore. For blackheads, pair with a dedicated BHA product.
Pair with TIRTIR Mask Fit Aura Cushion for the makeup step, or TIRTIR Mask Fit Make Up Fixer Peach for setting spray. Browse the full TIRTIR collection.
