ilso's Super Melting Sebum Cleansing Oil is designed specifically for oily and sebum-heavy skin, which is a skin type that often fears oil cleansers. The formulation uses lightweight ester oils that dissolve sebum and makeup without adding occlusive heavy oils that could clog pores. At $31.20 for 200ml, it's mid-tier for Korean cleansing oils, with the larger size reflecting the intended daily double-cleansing use pattern. The "Melting Sebum" positioning is the key differentiator: this is the oil cleanser for people who don't think they need an oil cleanser.
The common fear among oily-skinned users is that cleansing oils add to their oily skin problem. This is largely untrue if the oil cleanser is properly formulated and properly rinsed, but the fear has basis: heavy oils (mineral oil, olive oil, coconut oil) can leave residue that clogs pores. Lightweight ester oils (caprylic/capric triglyceride, ethylhexyl palmitate) dissolve sebum through chemistry without adding to pore burden. ilso leans on these lighter oils.
Lightweight ester oils dissolve sebum, sunscreen, and makeup through like-dissolves-like chemistry, without the heavy occlusive residue of traditional oils. On contact with water, the formula emulsifies cleanly into a milky wash that rinses away completely. The result: thorough removal of oil-based products and excess sebum, leaving skin clean but not stripped. Compared to sulfate-heavy gel cleansers that strip oily skin (and trigger rebound sebum production), a proper oil cleanser is actually better for oil control.
Apply to dry face (not wet). Dispense 3 to 4 pumps, massage onto dry skin for 60 to 90 seconds, focusing on makeup areas and T-zone. Wet fingertips with water to emulsify, continuing to massage until the oil turns milky. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. Follow with a foam or gel cleanser as the second cleanse to remove any remaining residue.
For oily skin: don't skip the second cleanse. Residue from any oil cleanser can clog pores over time on oily skin. Double cleansing ensures complete removal.
Not if properly formulated and rinsed. This uses non-comedogenic ester oils specifically chosen to avoid pore clogging. Properly emulsified and double-cleansed after, there's no residue. The fear is rational but the execution matters; a well-formulated oil cleanser supports oily skin rather than sabotaging it.
DHC is olive oil-based, heavier, more luxurious feeling but potentially heavier on oily skin. ilso is ester-based, lighter, better suited to oily skin specifically. For dry skin: DHC feels more nourishing. For oily skin specifically: ilso is better suited.
Not if fully emulsified and double-cleansed. If you skip the second cleanse, any oil cleanser residue can clog pores on oily skin. Always follow with a foam or gel cleanser.
Usually not needed. Morning cleansing is typically a light gel or water rinse. Save oil cleansing for evening, where it handles the accumulated sebum, makeup, and SPF from the day.
Daily evening use: 3 to 4 months. The pump dispenses consistent 3-to-4 pump servings.
Pair with ilso H-A Shot Booster Serum for brand routine consistency, or follow with a foam cleanser like medicube Zero Foam Cleanser for the second cleanse.
