ilso is a Korean clean-beauty brand that built its reputation on multifunctional products, and the Clean Mud Cream is one of its most-talked-about: a mud-based cleanser that works as both a deep-cleansing mask (long-wear, 5 to 10 minutes) and a quick-use cleanser (30-second rinse). The mud is kaolin-based, mild enough for weekly use but effective enough to meaningfully clear pore congestion. At $25.44 for 100g, it's priced at the mid-tier for mud cleansers, roughly comparable to Innisfree's volcanic clay options.
What distinguishes it is the cream-mud hybrid texture. Traditional mud masks dry out on the face, pulling oil and impurities but also drying the skin. ilso's formula adds creamy emollients that prevent the full dry-out, giving you mud-cleansing benefits without the post-mask tight-skin feeling. Papaya enzymes add a mild chemical exfoliation alongside the physical mud effect.
Kaolin clay absorbs excess sebum and pulls impurities from the pore surface. Papaya enzymes gently dissolve dead skin cells. Combined, the mud cream clears congestion more thoroughly than standard cleansers without the aggressiveness of scrubs. Post-use, skin looks immediately brighter and pores appear smaller (temporarily). Weekly use produces maintained clarity and texture improvement over 4 to 6 weeks.
Two options: (1) as a quick cleanser, apply to damp skin, massage 30 to 60 seconds, rinse. (2) as a mask, apply a thicker layer to dry or damp skin, leave 5 to 10 minutes, rinse with warm water. Don't let it fully dry out on the face; rinse at slightly tacky stage for best barrier preservation. Follow with toner to rebalance pH.
Less than pure kaolin masks. The creamy base prevents full dry-out. Very dry or sensitive skin may still feel tight after use; follow with hydrating toner and cream immediately.
Depends on your goal. As a mask, it provides deeper pore clearing (use weekly). As a cleanser, it gently cleans and brightens (use 2 to 3 times weekly in place of regular cleanser). Most users alternate depending on skin needs that week.
Innisfree's uses volcanic ash; ilso uses kaolin + enzymes. Innisfree is more drying and oil-pulling; ilso is gentler and more exfoliating (via papaya enzymes). Pick Innisfree for oily-acne control, ilso for dullness and gentle texture improvement.
Yes, but on non-active nights. If you're using daily BHA or retinol, skip those on mask-use nights to prevent over-exfoliation.
2 to 4 months with weekly mask use. Daily cleanser use shortens it to 6 to 8 weeks.
